Mississippi Mud Pie from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Pulling out another vintage recipe from the dessert files of long ago. I thought I'd shared this, but my search came up empty and this one is too good not to share. I've had this recipe for 37 years. Back when we were first married, we met a couple that lived down the road a piece. We lived on a 12 mile dirt road and they lived on a 10 mile dirt road going the opposite direction. On weekends,

Cooking for the Crew from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Spring has arrived in the desert. The mesquite has leafed out. The buzzards have returned. Baby calves are on the ground. And branding season is in full swing. That means I am in the kitchen, cooking for a crew. Yesterday I had 20.

Stepping Things Up This Week from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Fall Works are in full swing around here this week so our days are full. We sold 1768 hd of cattle at the sale barn on Monday and I had planned on grabbing groceries to feed the crew after work, but it was close to 7 p.m. when I left and I was too pooped to tackle my list. So that meant an early morning trip to town on Tuesday. Paul's Vet Supply, Sam's, and 2 grocery store stops because store #1

Meanwhile Back at the Ranch... from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

To say I've enjoyed being home would be an understatement. It's been SO good to be home! We've been busy, but  our days are filled with blessings. Here's a recap of our week. I didn't intend for this post to be so long, but try as I might, I can't seem to get a quick daily post written so you get it all at once. Sorry! Just know this did not all take place on one day. We're busy, but not THAT

Cattle - Cooking - Cookies from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

We sold more cows and weaned some calves this week. That means I had mouths to feed. DH is taking pity on me and we're foregoing breakfast for the crew, but my feet still hit the floor at 4 a.m. on Thursday. By 6, the Sour Cream Apple Squares were out of the oven and the Crock-pot Pizza was ready to do it's thing in the Crockpot:. All I had left to do was make bread, a big salad. and green beans

Kitchen Disasters from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Today's post is brought to you courtesy of Kevin the Quilter who's reply to a comment on a post sparked this subject. He asked me if I've ever cooked anything not worthy of eating or appetizing and I replied with this little story... I couldn't cook a lick when we were married. In fact, I made DH chicken fried steak one date night when we were in college. When he took his plate to the sink to

More Menu Chatter from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Ya'll probably don't give a hoot about what I fix for the crew, but I wanted to keep a record of it. When I looked around online for recipes other ranch wives fix for their crews, I kind of came up empty handed, but good food is good food and that's all that really matters. I've picked the brain of my ranch wife posse and we've all shared our favorites through the years so I think I've got a

Menu Planning from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

Next week we'll be branding the beef calves...tis the season.                                 I'll have a crew Tuesday through Saturday. 10-12 men for breakfast and dinner. DH chuckles at how long it takes me to prep for a week like this. After all these years, I have favorite menus I fall back on, but I always like to throw in a few new recipes to mix things up a bit. It still takes a
